The Personal Finance Guide #1 by Serena

Serena (MNM Student)

Hi everyone! Today we’ll be talking about budgeting. Money Not Magic actually had their own budgeting workshop on December 4, and it was one of my favorite workshops. In the workshop, we planned out what to buy for a virtual hiking trip. Our budget was $300.

Now let’s start. “A budget is basically just a plan for your money”, according to Rachel Cruze. Many people dread the thought of restricting themselves to a certain amount of money, and even the word “budgeting” brings them stress. But that really isn’t the way to look at it! A budget helps you in many ways. By having a budget you can easily plan out how and where you’re spending your money. Budgeting helps you…

  1. Get a clear idea of how much money you spend.

  2. Save for future goals.

Budgeting is just a fancy word for a money plan. And we should start looking at it that way instead of negatively. Here are some tips for budgeting…

  • Pay off your debt (you probably won’t have to worry about debt as a tween but anyway…)

  • Trimming the budget is always an option.

  • Tracking your progress is a good idea.

  • Making a schedule is ideal.

  • Start with the most important categories first.
