Gaming Platform Opportunities: Twitch by Alayna Fu

When a child says they want to be a gamer when they grow up, most adults would just laugh and tell them they’d never make it as a gamer. Nowadays, if you plan your approach just right, you can make millions a year from gaming. Take TommyInnit for example, he makes approximately 1.3 million dollars per year off Twitch. Want to learn how to start your Twitch channel off gaming now? Here’s how! This blog is part of a series called Gaming Platform Opportunities.

What’s Twitch?

Twitch is a streaming platform where you, well… livestream! It’s mostly for gaming but you can stream other things on it as well such as baking, talking, painting, etc. In this blog, we’ll mostly focus on the gaming part of Twitch.

How do I earn income off Twitch?

There are several ways to earn income from Twitch. There is donating, where the viewers leave a tip for the streamer so they can send the streamer a direct message on stream. Depending on the streamer’s settings, the donator can send media (photos or videos) for a certain amount of money for the higher chance of the streamer seeing the message/media. Another way to earn income off Twitch is ads! Similar to Youtube, Twitch can run ads before, during, and after the stream. Depending on how many people see the ads, the streamer earns a nice chunk of ad revenue. For the people that hate ads, they can buy a subscription to their streamer to skip the ads. This is called Subbing, similar to Youtube. Subbing, or subscribing costs around $5 a month, and you get special perks when you do sub to streamers such as exclusive emotes, chat advantages, and getting a cool color on your name in the chat. For those that want to support their favorite streamer even more, they can gift subs. Gifting subs is where you buy a subscription for random people that are watching the stream. And for the people that have Amazon prime, they can get a free subscription to their streamer. Did I mention Twitch Priming is free? Free money for the streamer, free subscription for the viewer, and fast Amazon shipping! Talk about a good deal.

So, now that you got the Twitch basics, do you want to be a Twitch streamer? Sounds pretty fun to me! All you have to do is have a Twitch account, a streaming device, and you’re pretty much set to start your career as a streamer! But of course, higher quality equipment equals better streams, and better streams means a higher chance of getting a sub! Remember, it’s good to start from nowhere, as long as you get somewhere.
